Community Incident
Dear Community Members,
The NAACP Bremerton Unit 1134 is providing this letter in reference to a reported racial harassment incident which occurred on October 18, 2022 at North Mason High School. This incident involved student athletes from Bremerton and North Mason High Schools as well as adults attending the sporting event.
The NAACP Bremerton Unit 1134 covers Kitsap, Mason and Jefferson Counties. When this information was received, I contacted both schools to establish a meeting to investigate this incident. We met with representatives from both schools, which included the Principals and the Asst. Superintendent for North Mason School District.
At the meeting we discussed what happened and viewed a partial video of the incident. Both schools agreed actions need to be taken to ensure student safety during school sponsored events. North Mason is working on developing racial refresher training for their students and parents. They are also improving visiting teams safety as they exit the sport facility by having a separate egress. Bremerton High is taking steps to ensure its athletes are properly chaperoned during all school sponsored activities. Both schools are preparing a joint statement to share with the community.
We also requested this information be shared with High School sporting organizations throughout Kitsap, Mason, and Jefferson Counties.
NAACP Bremerton Unit 1134 will continue to work with both schools to develop the aforementioned plans of action to ensure our youth athletes are safe during school sponsored events, as well as make it clear there will be zero tolerance for racial harassment anywhere.
We will follow up with additional information as this process progresses.
In Solidarity,
Robert Harris, President
