Re: Support for Renaming 8th Street as Bishop Lawrence Robertson Way

Dear Mayor Wheeler, Council President Rebelowski, Councilmember Cammarata, and Members of the City Council:

On behalf of the NAACP Bremerton Branch Unit 1134, we express our strong support for renaming 8th Street as Bishop Lawrence Robertson Way. This recognition is both timely and deeply deserved for a leader whose service is shaped of family’s color across Bremerton and Kitsap County.

As noted in the Marvin Williams Recreation Center’s formal request, Bishop Robertson “served Bremerton as a pastor, mentor, youth advocate, and community builder who worked alongside mayors, schools, law enforcement leaders, and community organizations to strengthen opportunity and stability for young people and families.” His vision and persistence led directly to the creation of the Marvin Williams Recreation Center, which “continues to serve as a trusted community hub supporting youth development, family engagement, health education, and neighborhood connection.” These contributions are not abstract, they are lived, daily impacts felt most strongly by underrepresented communities who have long lacked equitable access to safe spaces, resources, and civic acknowledgment.

Renaming 8th Street in his honor would provide visible affirmation of Black leadership in a city where such recognition has historically been limited. It would strengthen the cultural and historical narrative of Quincy Square, where Bishop Robertson supported early efforts to preserve the legacy of Bremerton’s Black community. It would also honor his role as a bridge‑builder during moments of community tension, when his steady voice helped guide Bremerton toward unity and understanding.

For young people, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, seeing Bishop Robertson’s name on the street where his vision became reality reinforces a powerful message: that their community’s leaders’ matter, and that their own contributions can shape the future of this city.

This renaming is grounded in community engagement, including neighborhood listening sessions and ongoing outreach. It reflects not only the legacy of one man, but the collective voice of the Black community who recognize the profound and lasting impact of his service.

For these reasons, the NAACP Bremerton Branch Unit 1134 respectfully urges the City Council to approve the renaming of 8th Street as Bishop Lawrence Robertson Way. Doing so would truly honor years of leadership by Bishop Robinson, uplift the history of Bremerton’s Black community, and inspire future generations through a meaningful and permanent civic tribute.

With respect,

Robert L. Harris

President, NAACP Bremerton Branch Unit 1134
